About Oumou

Press and Links

One of West Africa's most admired and outspoken artists, adored by her public, Oumou Sangare is the most popular female singer in Mali and alongside Salif Keita she is arguably the country's most famous musician. And this in a country renowned for its music where stars such as Amadou and Mariam, Toumani Diabaté, Bassekou Kouyate, Rokia Traoré and Ali Farka Touré have dominated the ‘world music’ scene on the international arena.

Oumou is strong, charismatic and passionate about her homeland. A modern woman, she bridges the divide between cosmopolitan and traditional Africa. Loyal to the beliefs she sang about at the start of her career, she continues to speak out and spark national debate on previously taboo subjects such as polygamy, underage forced marriage, sensual love and the role of women in African society.

“Her voice is captivating; even though I can't understand what she is saying, I understand what she's saying.”—Alicia Keys
